This peacock was admiring it’s reflection on the side of the car for quite some time before settling on it’s roof to wait for lunch. Lunch was rice and curry! Though it’s unusual, sometimes wild peacocks do find themselves strongly attached to humans and don’t fly away even when the children play roughly with it. This bird hasn’t yet grown the majestic set of tail feathers that peacocks are famous. It lives with the family of a care taker at a small estate in Seru Kele.

I can hear you say: Hang on a second spiders don’t build nests. Well this one has. The lady (or at least I think it’s the lady) is inside the small tunnel fashioned out of gossamer. She is their keeping the eggs warm while the male keeps vigil outside.

More than a hundred different varieties of Dragonflys can be found in Sri Lanka. I have shown you two of them before. Here is a third. My apologies for not being able to name this one either.

A Pipit (whether a Blyth’s Pipit or a Paddyfield Pipit I cannot say) at a dried up lake in the dry zone.

Brown Headed Barbet is a bird with a very distinct voice. Can be seen all over Sri Lanka and in parts of India. Lives in tree holes. This one has chosen a coconut tree for it’s nest. Barbets, Parrots and Myna birds often eye the same tree hole
